Learning a Basic Guitar Lesson

If you are looking to learn how to play guitar, or if you want to learn a new aspect of guitar, you may benefit from a guitar lesson or two. There are so many different options for someone who wants to play guitar. We will cover some of the different aspects of guitar lessons below.

Books on Guitar

Many people give themselves guitar instruction with books and videos. You can get books on the absolute basics of chords and scales to learn to play guitar. You can also find books on particular areas of guitar playing such as playing blues, folk guitar, or playing rock guitar. Check your local library and you will see the many options of books and videos available to help you. Your local music shop will also be able to offer you many books on instruction. You may want to look online at eBay and Half.com and similar places to find books cheaper than buying them brand new or from a music store.

Reading Guitar Music

If you want to learn to play guitar long term, you will want to consider learning to read tab or music notation. Many books will cover tab as part of their early lesson plan. A guitar instructor will likely make this one of the first steps as well. You need to learn what the parts of the guitar are, then you need to learn what each string represents, then you need to learn to read the guitar tab.

Once you learn how to read the guitar tab, you will be able to figure out basic music and then more advanced stuff as well. Learning to read music is a very basic step towards becoming a player although many guitarists cannot read music! You cannot get through some of the theory related aspects of music if you do not know how to read tab or music notation.

Hiring an Instructor

If you really want to learn to play and if you are not good at teaching yourself, or if you want to play professionally, or if you have reached your maximum point of self-teaching, you may decide to hire an instructor. An instructor can help you in ways that a book can't by answering your questions directly and in a face to face environment. If you have questions from a book, or if you do not understand something that is written, it may be a little harder and a little more time consuming to find the answer.

When hiring an instructor, you may need to do a little research to find an instructor. You can check the yellow pages of your phone book for listings of instructors. You can also check your local community college and you should check with people you know that play. These people may be able to tell you someone available that can teach you. All guitar instructors are not born equal!
