Who Is Steve Lukather?

For over 20 years, Steve Lukather has been a fantastic influence on the music industry. Born October 21, 1957, Steve would grow up to become a guitar legend. He is a versatile musician, guitarist, vocalist, composer, producer and arranger. When he was 7, his father bought him a guitar and he has been playing ever since. Of course, he played music even before that first guitar. Steve was playing drums and keyboards. The keyboard is an instrument that Steve has used his entire career, even to write music that would be played on his guitar.

Steve was always musically inclined and taught himself to play guitar over the years. He hung out with people who played guitar that helped him learn and he also listened to a lot of great music.
The Beatles were a big influence at that time on Lukather's music.
He continued to be self-taught until 15 years old and then started taking professional lessons from classical/jazz/country player Jimmy Wyble. In these classes he learned how to read music and he also learned about orchestration.
He began to admire it and thought it would be cool to play on all these different bands albums.

In his high school band he was playing with Mike Landau, John Pierce, Steve Porcaro and Carlos Vega. Steve Porcaro and Steely Dan was a big influence on Lukather and his career. All of those high school boys grew up to be very famous in their professional music careers. While Steve Lukather may not be quite as well-known as the rest of them, he has made a great career for himself as well. He has written many songs for many artists throughout his career and continues today. He has contributed sessions to hundreds of different artists over the years. His versatility is like no other when it comes to this.

With tours planned for 2005 as well, it seems Lukather will be doing this for the rest of his life.
