Playing rock guitar is the dream of a big majority of people who decide they want to play. The glamour, glitz and excitement of being a rock star is enough to entice almost anyone. America is known as the home of rock and roll and pop guitar music. Rock n' roll was a converging of different types of music such as blues, jazz, country and folk music. Rock and the electric guitar seemed somehow to go hand in hand.

The guitar was not the only instrument used in rock and roll but it because a very nig part of it. Soon the guitar was replacing roles once played by piano and saxophone.

Influential Rock Guitar Greats

When we think back on rock guitar, it's difficult to say exactly who the first was but there are many greats that come to mind. Jimi Hendrix was one of the first influential figures in rock and roll. Others included Chuck berry, Bill Haley, Bo Diddley, Scotty Moore, Elvis Presley, Carl Perkins, Cliff Gallup, Eddie Cochran, James Burton, Buddy Holly, Steve Cropper and more all had a big influence on rock music.

If you plan to play rock guitar, you still need to learn the basics. You might want to learn to play on an acoustic guitar and then you can move up to an electric guitar later. They are two different types of instruments so you will still have to start from the beginning with playing an electric guitar but it will be easier if you had first learned on an acoustic.

 

Rock guitar has branched out in many different directions so there are a lot of options for you to choose from if deciding to play. Rock guitar began with the rockabilly boogie-bass sounds of the 1950s. You may want to learn some of the basics of boogie and rockabilly first. Then you may move on to other sounds and techniques.

Don't be Fooled

You need to be sure you are not fooled by the wild and crazy lifestyles and appearances of some of the bad boys of rock and roll. Rock guitar still takes practice and hard work. Don't be deceived by the appearances some heavy metalists and hard rock performers show while on stage. It may not seem very organized but they are not just pounding out chords. They have a rehearsed and planned routine. If you really want to be a rock guitarist, you'll have to work at it like any other type of music.
