how to change a guitar string

If you have a guitar, and if you will be playing a guitar, an important thing to learn will be how to change a guitar string. One important thing to remember is that it is best to replace the strings one at a time. Begin with the heaviest and then work your way through them all.

Removing the String

You should loosen the string and untie the end from the tuning post. Next you should remove the end pin if there is one in the bridge by pulling it out with your finger tips.  If it's a nylon string guitar, you might need to untie the string from the bridge instead.

Replacing the String

To replace the string, insert the ball end of the new string into the hole in the bridge right where the old string came out.   You will notice the small groove inside.   Next, you will put the ball end of the string in until the ball goes below the bottom of the bridge and the string is against the groove in the bridge hole.  Now, put the pin in gently and so the groove in the pin faces the string and pull up a little on the string so the ball comes up and stops, hitting the bottom of the bridge.

The pin should be pushed in gently but firmly.  Don't hammer it in or the bridge may split. If the winding hits the saddle, try to pull it back carefully. The other end of the string will tie to the tuning posts. You might want to tune this string now before moving on to the next one.

Preserving Your Guitar Strings

Guitar strings are meant to last long naturally. What actually wears down on the strings are from you playing them and from them being exposed to air. The oils and dirt on your fingers build up and result in breaking down of the strings. You can help prevent this by taking care of your strings as much as possible. After each use you should wipe them off with a clean towel.

If your strings are dead and do not sound clean, you can revive them temporarily until you get some new ones by scrubbing them with soap and water. When buying new strings, there are many different options out there for you.

Types of Strings

Much of choosing new strings has to do with personal preference and what type of music you play. There are nylon strings, steel strings and wound metal strings. There are light, medium and heavy gauges and there are different shapes and contours. As far as brand goes, it is mostly just an issue of preference.
